Zahiya Kaddoura Kaffafi: A prominent critical academic and activist

Zahiya Kaddoura Kaffafi was a critical academic and historian of Lebanon as well as of women’s movements. She was among the few women activists to openly “oppose the French Mandate in Lebanon.” Kaffafi published numerous works and studies, several of which have been translated into multiple languages ¹. She became the chairperson of the History Department at the Lebanese University in 1961. In 1959, the Lebanese government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nominated her to be a consultant for the Arab League ².
